Popular Dildo Sizes and What You Need to Know
Does size matter? Is there such a thing as too big? How big is too big? With so many different sizes of dildos, which ones are the most popular? 6 inches? 10 inches? 13 inches? 17 inches?? If the average penis size is 5-6 inches, is a 20 inch dildo really that necessary?
We put that question up to the internet, and collected data on the average monthly search volume in the United States for dildos of all sizes. And its clear, Larger dildo sizes were searched much more frequently.
Measuring Dildo Size
First things first: what do we mean by Dildo size? We typically compare dildos based on their length and girth. The average penis is 5-6 inches in length and 1.2-1.5 inches in girth. Girth is essentially a measurement for the width at thickest part of shaft. Head shapes are of course unique and different and are not typically included in any measurement. Yet the most popular dildo sizes are greater than 6 inches. The reality is that many realistic shaped dildos are quite large and are much larger than most real-life penises.
Dildos can be quite expensive, typically though you get way you pay for...the better quality medical grade silicone raw material costs more than the cheap stuff thats going to disintegrate in your body. So choose wisely, and pick the a size you’ll like and enjoy...and maybe that's something different than you already have at home. Often times, it’s hard to size up the dildos from the pictures online, so the more you know beforehand, the better. The two measurements we use to size dildos are length and girth but look for comparison graphics like the one below.
Dildo Length
When we talk about length, we’re either talking about the total length of the dildo which may include the flared base and testicles, or how much of the dildo can go inside you, insertable length. A dildo with a large base and testicals may be listed as a certain length, but only some of the dildo may be insertable. Again the chart from our Velvet Thruster sex toy site displays those measurements as means understanding.
Dildo Girth
The girth of the dildo is either listed as diameter (the width of the shaft), or the circumference (the distance around the shaft). The vast majority of dildos have a diameter that is between 1 and 2 inches. For reference, the average penis girth is 1.5 inches. Depending on the dildo’s material, you may feel more or less of the listed girth. As you get more experienced with sex toys, you'll find that variety is amazing and the process working up to bigger thicker dildos is enjoyable! Solo or partnered, enjoy the process.
Bigger is Not Always Better
The most popular dildo sizes aren’t meant for everyone. Dildos can have many purposes and you may be looking for something more than just how deep it can go or wide it is. Both the G-spot in a woman and the prostate in a man are located only 2.5 to 3 inches inside. Although long dildos may be more popular, they are not always the most pleasurable and what people desire. For this reason, Velvet Co.’s collection of vibrating dildos not only deliver powerful vibrating thrust, but the y have been engineered to flex while thrusting and curve while you manipulate it to just the right spot! Consider one of our handles so you arms aren't extended and tired the whole time.
Finding the Right-Sized Dildo for You
Whether you’re a beginner and you’re looking for your first dildo or you’re more experienced and looking to fill yourself or your partner, dildo size can make a huge difference.
Generally, beginners should opt for slimmer, shorter models, and then work their way up to larger models. If you’re more experienced, then you can add to the girth or length of the dildo you already have, choose a stronger or harder material, or choose a curved shape for greater arousal. Velvet thruster prime allows you to change heads to get a different experience during play! You can build your own dildo with the custom configurator found here!
If you have a partner (that is open to getting measured) then you can compare what dildo size you or your partner would like with the real thing. Don't freak out, you won't be the first person to measure your carrots, cucumbers, or zucchini to get a good idea of how much length and girth is right for you!
Keep in mind that if you feel like the dildo you ordered is not big enough, you can always purchase a “penis sleeve” which can add length or girth to your dildo’s size.
Using Bigger Dildos
Would you like to be stretched and filled to to expand the sensations? You may want to consider adding more girth to your dildo. Adding more girth may mean more stimulation.
If you’re testing out a bigger dildo for the first time, it’s best to use a lot of lubricant and start slowly. Be sure to listen to what your body is telling you and add more lubricant as needed. If it gets to the point where you’re still uncomfortable and it hurts to continue, you should consider going down in size and getting a dildo with smaller girth and/or length. Remember that if you start with a smaller dildo, you can always add on penis sleeves to increase the size of the dildo.
